Nurses Week runs from May 6th through May 12th and it is a celebratory week for the 3.6 million nurses that are in the United States. Last year, we highlighted some nursing pioneers. This year, we are highlighting one of the most influential roles nurses can have on others: the ability for nurses to save lives.
Nurses do save lives in a variety of ways. In some cases, their actions during life threatening events are what can bring the patient or person out of that situation and back into recovery. However, as I thought about this topic more, it became clear that nurses are continuously working to prevent these life-threatening events from occurring to their patients. Assessing, diagnosing, planning, intervening and evaluating are all steps in the process of preserving the patient’s life.
Over the course of the week I will highlight several stories that demonstrate the impact nurses have on saving the lives of others. They will range from a nurse stepping in to an emergency, a nurse describing what it is like to be in the role of a life saver each day, a family member’s perspective on the power of nurses, and that of the nurse’s perspective on what drives them in the care delivery process for others.
I hope that you enjoy the stories that will be shared this week. I also hope that if you are a nurse or a nursing student, these stories will inspire you in your work or future work. Happy Nurses Week!
